Evicting Office “Elephants”
Boosts Worker Productivity and Morale
According to Mage, elephants
in the office are less-than-functional workplace behaviors such as gossip,
mediocrity, and negative politics. “Left
unchecked, negative workplace cultures drag down morale and performance. In order to move an organization forward,
leaders must first evict the elephants.”
Based upon his research with executives, Mage recommends leaders follow a
three-step process for evicting the elephants.
“Step one is to set clear expectations for what a positive culture looks
like, and role model those behaviors as a leader. Next, engage the energy and passion of others
in the change process. Step three is
equipping people with skillful alternatives to negative habits,” Mage
explains.
The article in Association Management Magazine presents case studies from three
executives who successfully changed workplace cultures, along with practical
suggestions leaders can apply immediately.
Mage continues, “By using courageous, open communication strategies, the
leaders we profiled show how to face vexing organizational problems with
toughness and compassion.” Mage offers a
detailed explanation of these leadership communication approaches in his new book,
“FREE to LEAD: 5 Keys to Getting It Done without Doing It All.” (Making It Work
Publications, $20.00)
